When discussing ACC schools and the players that went to the NBA, one would have to start and end with North Carolina and Michael Jordan. Jordan is, to many, the greatest player in NBA history. North Carolina though has also produced former slam dunk champion Vince Carter and NBA Champions and Hall of Famers, Bob McAdoo, Billy Cunningham and James Worthy.

Duke, the team that annually rivals UNC, has produced many stars but few elite players. The list of Blue Devils includes Christian Laettner, Danny Ferry, Grant Hill, Elton Brand and the current number one draft pick Kyrie Irving. Many of these players were excellent second and third options on contending teams in their NBA careers.

Wake Forest scores an honorable third on the list of ACC contribution to the NBA based on two players. The first is NBA Champion and future Hall of Famer, Tim Duncan. The second player is current superstar point guard Chris Paul. Honorable mention must also go to Georgia Tech and North Carolina State. The Yellow Jackets produced Chris Bosh, Kenny Anderson and Dennis Scott, all of whom would play for a title. North Carolina State gave the NBA David Thompson, an elite scoring machine.

The Miami Hurricanes of the ACC have produced the best NFL players of the years. The Hurricanes program is known for its toughness and intensity. They play in Miami, Florida and attract some of the best talent anywhere in the world to play for the team.

This past year alone the Hurricanes had four players from their defense selected in the NFL draft. This is an amazing number as that means that four out of their eleven defensive starters will now be playing football on second. Impressive statistics such as these, shows why the Hurricanes have produced the best NFL players from the ACC.

Additionally, the Hurricanes have produced an NFL player since 1974. This incredible streak of 37 years is unmatched anywhere else in the ACC. This ability to constantly produce NFL quality players on a yearly basis makes them a tough match-up in the college game.

If you want to find the program in the ACC that produces the best NFL players, you don’t need to look any farther the University of Miami. This historic franchise has produced Warren Sapp, one of the top defensive ends in NFL history. They had legendary QB Bernie Kosar. And the future looks bright as well.

Although the SEC received most of the press in this year’s NFL Draft due to elite players like Auburn quarterback Cam Newton and LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson, the ACC also had a good showing with three players selected in the first round.

Christian Ponder, a quarterback from Florida State, was selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the 12th pick. Although he is a talented player, most talent evaluators thought this was a considerable reach by the Vikings. Minnesota, desperately looking for a new quarterback since the retirement of Brett Favre, panicked after both Blaine Gabbert and Jake Locker came off the board in quick succession.

Robert Quinn, a defensive end from North Carolina, was selected by the St. Louis Rams with the 14th pick. A solid pass rusher, he raw talent level may have justified an earlier selection. However, a benign brain tumor had some teams questioning his long-term health. In addition, his character became an issue after he was suspended for the entire 2010 season as part of the UNC football scandal.

Finally, Anthony Castonzo, a tackle from Boston College, was drafted with the 23rd pick by the Indianapolis Colts. Castonzo demonstrates a solid technique with no glaring weaknesses, a perfect selection for a team looking to reinforce its line to protect quarterback Peyton Manning. What’s 1 more click? Keep tuning into your direct football channels to catch some of the more obscure games and keep an eye on these teams – they’re the ones to watch this year:
Georgia Tech – After having a couple of inconsistent years the Jackets are set to make quite a comeback in the 2011 season. They’ve been practicing hard and are finally bonding as a team after a few coaching hurdles…they’ll be the team to beat this year.
VA Tech – Everyone knows the Hokies have been on a roll and this season will be no different. They’ve got the offense to beat and with such a rabid fan base each and every game is sure to be deafeningly loud.
University of Virginia – Don’t count the Hoos out just yet. The orange and blue has an illustrious history in the game of pigskin and with a new coach designed to recruit in-state players they’re shaping up to have a roster to end all rosters. Keep an eye on the Cavs.

The ACC is on its way to becoming a major football power with the re-emergence of some key college football powers. The Florida State Seminoles and the Clemson Tigers will once again be tough teams this season but there are a few other teams that may be tough to rate until the season gets underway.

North Carolina was under fire by the NCAA last season but they still have enough talent to compete with the big boys in the ACC. Jimbo Fisher has hit the ground running with Florida State and he could have the team to beat this season despite breaking in new quarterback, E.J. Manuel.

Do not forget about the old guard of the ACC, the Virginia Tech Hokies. Frank Beamer is looking for a marked improvement from a young Hokies defense and his defensive coordinator, Bud Foster, is still looking for his captain as spring practice begins.

Boston College could be in for a big down turn in 2011. They lose Mark Herzlich but return several key defensive players. Another team that could take a nose dive in 2011 is the Maryland Terrapins. Ralph Friedgen’s dismissal by Maryland was not popular with players or the fan base.

With springtime upon us and the first training camps just a few weeks away, the NCAA is preparing for another exciting college football season. The Pac 10 and SEC should remain strong. The Big 10 has expanded, adding a tough Nebraska team to the mix. While there is a broad spectrum of talent across the nation, no conference has more upswing in the upcoming season than the ACC.
Not suprisingly, leading the field in the conference will be Florida State, coming off a decent 2010 campaign. By most accounts, the Seminoles had the number one recruiting class for 2011, and coach Jimbo Fisher has them heading in the right direction.
A suprise to some might be the Hurricanes. Miami is cominig off a mediocre season, at seven and six, but injuries plagued them last season and are poised to make a return to the national spotlight. Jacory Harris is back with the team, in which case the team can only improve.
Virginia Tech figures to be prominent once again this season, although their schedule is condusive to a successful season; their three toughest matchups will be Clemson, Georgia Tech and Miami – two of three which will be played at Lane Stadium.
While the national champion will most likely not come out of this conference, the ACC can expect to be represented nicely in the BCS bowls. If FSU catches fire, they might have a chance, but it looks like they;ll need another season or two to learn how to win before they can be considered serious champion contenders.

Virginia Tech is a team that consistently is at the top of the ACC Standings. They will have to reload though at the quarterback position now that Tyrod Taylor is moving on to the NFL. The question in ACC Football is whether or not teams like Boston College will be able to move forward and closer to the level that they were playing at before Jeff Jagizindski left the team, Boston College has been struggling on the recruiting trail and will certainly have some holes at the linebacker position that will probably stop them from competing well in the ACC. Some people wonder whether Al Golden will be able to hold on to many of the recruits that Randy Shannon had lined up at the University of Miami Florida. Al Golden’s starting point at the University of Miami may almost completely hinge upon the play of quarterback Jacory Harris.

Butch Davis will certainly be happy to get last season behind him given that he no longer has to deal with Marvin Austin and all of the scandals that revolved around his team and agents. North Carolina should be able to make a run for the ACC Coastal crown. Bryn Renner is someone who looks to compete for the starting quarterback position at UNC.

With the entire 2010-11 football season now in the rear view, what did we learn about the much maligned ACC when pitted against the best its fellow conferences had to offer? What the ACC lacked in top performing squads over the course of the season, it certainly made up for in the depth of its mediocrity. Sending a total 9 members bowling over the holidays, the ACC trailed only the SEC in terms of bowl participants, falling one short of the pace-setting 10 schools. Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, NC State and Virginia Tech all extended their seasons into December and/or January. Of the 9 teams, 4 emerged victorious, including UNC over Tennessee, FSU over South Carolina, Maryland over East Carolina and NC State over West Virginia.Though a .444 Winning Percentage is less than optimal, considering the amount of crow consumed by ACC schools regarding the quality of their conference over the course of the year, a cumulative 2-0 against the bally-hooed SEC can stand alone as a victory. Of the automatically qualifying conferences, only the Big East performed substantially better than its counterparts, winning 4 of its 6 bowl games. The Pac 10 and SEC finished at an even .500, though did boast both participants in the BCS Championship, meanwhile the Big 10 and Big 12 walked away with identical 3-5 marks to bring up the rear.Where the ACC did struggle was on the big stage, with Virginia Tech taking a lopsided defeat to Stanford in the Orange Bowl, continuing a disturbing trend in BCS bowls. In fact, the Big 10, SEC, Big 12 and Pac 10 all added a BCS bowl win to their conference tally, with only the ACC and Big East on the outside looking in.It stands the ACC is plenty as one pans down the conference standings, but still lacking an elite team since the decline of Florida State and Miami for national juggernauts. No team can be written off as an ACC cupcake, but playing the conference champion is still seen as the easy road to a BCS win.
