A Look Back at Bowl Season

With the entire 2010-11 football season now in the rear view, what did we learn about the much maligned ACC when pitted against the best its fellow conferences had to offer?What the ACC lacked in top performing squads over the course of the season, it certainly made up for in the depth of its mediocrity. Sending a total 9 members bowling over the holidays, the ACC trailed only the SEC in terms of bowl participants, falling one short of the pace-setting 10 schools. Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, NC State and Virginia Tech all extended their seasons into December and/or January. Of the 9 teams, 4 emerged victorious, including UNC over Tennessee, FSU over South Carolina, Maryland over East Carolina and NC State over West Virginia.Though a .444 Winning Percentage is less than optimal, considering the amount of crow consumed by ACC schools regarding the quality of their conference over the course of the year, a cumulative 2-0 against the bally-hooed SEC can stand alone as a victory. Of the automatically qualifying conferences, only the Big East performed substantially better than its counterparts, winning 4 of its 6 bowl games. The Pac 10 and SEC finished at an even .500, though did boast both participants in the BCS Championship, meanwhile the Big 10 and Big 12 walked away with identical 3-5 marks to bring up the rear.
